Additional Study Away Opportunities

Students can study away through the University of South Carolina and other organizations and universities.

In order for a study abroad experience to fulfill the Honors  Beyond the Classroom (BTC) requirement, the course must be conducted entirely away from USC. This means that all instructional activities, including lectures, discussions and assignments, must take place in an off-campus setting as part of the immersive learning experience. Courses that include Fall Break or Spring Break travel will not fulfill the Honors BTC requirement. Courses must be passed with a C or better and appear on your USC transcript.

Semester Away Programs

Students who choose to study away for a full semester will be granted nine credit hours towards Honors requirements. Three will fulfill the BTC requirement, and six will fulfill an Honors elective. This allows students to study away from campus while maintaining Honors progression. To learn more about semester away opportunities and course-planning, students will communicate with their academic advisor and plan a visit to USC’s Education Abroad Office

Year Away

Honors students who choose to study away for two consecutive semesters will be awarded nine credits towards Honors requirements. Three will fulfill the BTC requirement, and six will fulfill Honors electives. This way students are able to study away fromc ampus while maintaining Honors progression.

To learn more about opportunities and course planning, it is vital students communicate with their academic advisor and plan their year abroad in coordination with the university’s Education Abroad office.

University of Warwick

The university's exchange program in England is designed to expose students to British life and culture. Students will attend the University of Warwick and take classes within the history department, which is the second highest-ranked history program in the U.K. The campus is located on the edge of the city of Coventry, situated in the heart of England. The program at the University of Warwick offers a variety of subject options within the discipline of history: art, modern European, renaissance, cultural, sociological, French, and comparative histories to allow students to gain a well-rounded view on their selected topic.

Scholarships are available for students who are looking to participate in this program. For more information and questions, please contact Dylan Adame, experiential learning coordinator.

Honors Beyond the Classroom Policy

  • The BTC requirement can be fulfilled by completing an approved Honors BTC course, as classified on our Honors course web page, or an approved BTC course through your major.
  • Although a student can take a one credit hour approved BTC course (E.g. a one-hour internship or research course), a total of three credit hours must be completed to successfully fulfill the BTC requirement.
  • To fulfill the Honors BTC requirement, the course(s) must appear on a student’s transcript and be credit-bearing.
  • Nine hours of approved non-Honors BTC coursework in a student’s major can fulfill Honors College requirements. This includes the three credit BTC requirement and up to two Honors electives.

Challenge the conventional. Create the exceptional. No Limits.
