Society of Physics Students

The USC chapter of SPS exists to help students transform themselves into contributing members of the professional community, as well as aid in students navigating the physics curriculum. Course work develops only one range of skills. Other skills needed to flourish professionally include effective communication and personal interactions, leadership experience, establishing a personal network of contacts, presenting scholarly work in professional meetings and journals, and outreach services to the campus and local communities. We also acknowledge that it is not easy to complete a physics degree. As such, our members who are in their junior and senior years make sure to take time to help newer students both cope with the stress of classes and learn what they should be learning from their courses. Even for members who are not physics majors, this club is a way to participate in physics outreach around Columbia and keep up to date with events going on within the physics community.

Weekly Meetings and Events

The Society of Physics Students (SPS) hosts weekly meetups for studying, community, and fun.
Power Hour is our collaborative work session where students can get help on physics homework, compare problem-solving approaches, and study alongside friends.
To wrap up the week, ATOM (After-class Tabletop & On-campus Meetup) is our Friday hangout—tabletop games, casual conversation, and a low-stress way to connect with other physics students.

Location: Jones Physical Science Center, Room 409 (Rogers Room)

You can also find us on the Garnet Gate

Spring 2026 meeting times (weekly):

  • Power Hour: Wednesday, 5:30–7:30 pm
  • ATOM (After-class Tabletop & On-campus Meetup): Friday, 5:00–8:00 pm

Society of Physics Students Officers:

Gage Moccia

Vice President. Junior Physics major. He has interest in physics education and engineering physics. He works as a Learning Assistant for Physics 2 here on campus.

Reagan Stanton

Treasurer. Junior Physics major with a concentration in Astronomy and math minor. Currently working on two astronomy research projects, one involving the magnetic fields of a dwarf galaxy in the Local Group and the other involving the design of an instrument to measure circular polarization of the cosmos.

Jace Wrightson

President. Senior Physics and Mathematics Dual Major. He conducts research at the SmartState Center for Experimental Nanoscale Physics as an undergraduate researcher. His primary interest is in theoretical condensed matter physics.
