Media and Society

The University Bulletin describes this course as one that covers the principles, history, philosophies, theories of the mass media and allied professions and their societal role and impact.

In essence, this course will challenge students to think more deeply about mass media in general and their personal media habits specifically. After taking this course students should know the history, theory, and current practices of the contemporary mass media. The course will focus on the major media and how these have been shaped by history, technology, and culture and how they in turn have influenced cultural attitudes and behaviors.

Learning Outcomes

After successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Recognize and apply media literacy skills by discerning personal and public media habits, preferences, and behaviors;
  2. Analyze issues of diversity and inclusion across different media frames (current, historical, cultural, economic, and technological); 
  3. Identify and contextualize media industry trends and challenges concerning media influence in society and social institutions;
  4. Explain and assess theoretical perspectives that guide our understanding of mass media and its impact on society and culture.
